She is my great great grandmother, and I cannot find any info about her or her parents at all except that she married Ben Hawkins, and later she married Cicero Lockett. I am not sure where she was born, or where she was from, but she lived in Texas.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14767644101364155214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2104437978466596073.post-52470569151441979902018-03-20T17:51:27.112-04:002018-03-20T17:51:27.112-04:00The compiled service records at fold3.com have som...The compiled service records at fold3.com have some additional information about the 4 Goings men who volunteered 12 Sep 1861 for 12 months' service in the 35th NC Infantry's Company C, the "Moore County Scotch Riflemen." The regiment transferred from state to confederate service 01 Jan 1862, and enlistments were extended to the duration of the war. They mustered in for training 06 Nov 1861 at Raleigh.

Andrew Goins/Gowins [b c.1824] was a 37yo farmer, 5’ 9¾” tall; present Jan/Feb 1862, killed at Malvern Hill [Henrico Co Va] 01 or 02 Jul 1862; a survivor's claim was filed 07 Aug 1862 by his widow Rachel Goins.

Henry Goins/Gowins was a 31yo or 34yo farmer [b 1827-1830], 5’ 7¾” tall. He was issued clothing at the hospital 24 Jan 1864; he was examined 12 Feb 1863 and granted a further 30 day furlough. He was issued clothing Sep 1864, and was with his regiment for musters Nov 1864 – Feb 1865. A pension enquiry from Oklahoma officials was answered 01 Sep 1915, noting that the soldier was never known as John Gaines (though in fact he appears by that name in the Fredericksburg casualty list)

Richard Goins was a 24yo farmer [b c.1837], 5’ 9¼” tall. He was absent sick Jan/Feb 1862, present Mar/Apr 1862, and received his enlistment bounty 28 May 1862. He was at Chimborazo hospital Richmond VA for “debility” 21-25 Aug 1862. This is not for the regiment's "Croatan" cook Sidney, presumably the one from Pocket Creek, but a Daniel M Goins, who volunteered as a private soldier at Carthage, Moore Co NC on 09 Sep 1861 for the duration of the war, age 32. He appears "present" on muster rolls Jul 1861 - Dec 1861, and is named (without a present/absent statement) Jan 1862 - Jun 1863 (sick May 1862). He is absent for Jul/Aug 1863 with the note "Started home 18 Aug on 30 days detail to get a fresh horse." For Sep/Oct 1863 he and his horse were paid. He next appears present Apr-Sep 1864, and then records end. This man can also be found in the NPS Soldiers and Sailors database (https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers-detail.htm?soldierId=5D09C6A1-DC7A-DF11-BF36-B8AC6F5D926A).

This is presumably the 30 year old head of household 394 from the 1860 census (like Sidney, a member of the Pocket Creek community).

One of the regiment's commanding officers, W.P. My great-great grandmother (Nessie Maude Goins) was born in the Carthage section of Moore County, North Carolina. Her parents, Larkin and Minnie H. Goins, are listed on the 1910 Census as Mulatto. This was a revelation for me as I always knew my gg grandmother Nessie as a "full-blooded" North Carolina Indian.

Do you or anyone viewing this comment have any information or thoughts on the true racial makeup of the Goins of Carthage, Moore County? It contained the article by Dr. DeMarce entitled, "Verry Slitly Mixt': Tri-Racial Isolate Families of the Upper South--A Genealogical Study," page 27.”

William Goins and Keziah “Kezzie” Sinclair Goins lived in Moore and adjoining Chatham County in the Pocket Creek area until after the Civil War. They removed to Indiana where Keziah “Kezzie” Sinclair Goins died. He then removed to Kansas.

Children born to William Goins and Keziah Sinclair Goins include:

Richard Goins born about 1836

Margaret Goins born about 1838

Duncan Goins born about 1839

Edward D. It reads [header] "Daniel Goins' Genealogy. The following is the true genealogy of Daniel Goins & family. his great grand father was said to be a coloredman, his great grand mother Elisabeth [sic] Goins was white, his grand father Wm. Goins was mixt, his grand mother Patsy Petty was white, his father Sandy Murchison was white, his mother Leah Goins slitly mixt..."

Margaret's portion reads as follows: "The following is the true genealogy of Margaret Goins & family. her great grand father Edward Goins slitly mixed about an eight, her grand mother Celia Cofer white, her father Wm. Goins verry slitly mixt, her mother Kisiah Sinclare white...."

The clerk made an error when he recorded that Edward Goins was Margaret's "great-"grandfather. We know from another history given by Margaret's brother Edward that Edward was their grandfather, not great-grandfather. Also, there are lots of deeds that show that Edward Goins was married to Celia Cofer, who was the grandmother.

Eli Wadsworth of Moore County, aged 66, testified. Andrew Cole of Moore County, aged 72, also testified. The document is dated 16 March 1882.

The second go-round for Daniel Goins was recorded in Randolph County, North Carolina Deed Book 53:227 (FHL microfilm no. 470246). Again, the header is "Genealogy of Daniel Goins." Flora McDonald and Catharine McBryde of Cumberland County, aged 88 and 83 respectively, testified on 16 July 1884 that "they are acquainted with Daniel Goins late of the county and State aforesaid, that they know his Father, Grand Father, and Great Grand father, that his Great Grand Father (John Harmon) was a native of Portugal, and was always called a Portugan, and he was of the color of the natives of that place, and that he and his sons & grandsons always exercised the right of and passed as white men in every respect."

So, how does John Harmon fit into Daniel's genealogy?? If we analyze the first document, then John Harmon is the great-grandfather "said to be a coloredman" who had a relationship with an Elizabeth Goins. It is believed that William Goins and Patsy Petty were the parents of both Leah (Daniel's mother) and Edward (Margaret's grandfather). Thus, Daniel and Margaret Goins were first cousins once removed.Karen J.
