Enoch is a mulatto born in VA, no race is indicated for the others. Sally was born in NC, Ambrose in VA (the information is consistent for both years; https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8DV-3TB and https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M41T-3BX).

After the war, Ambrose appears in a series of marriage records. As "Ambris Goyn," he marries "Molise" J. Dunkin 18 Jul 1866 in Surry Co, NC (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XF92-2X4).

In the 1870 census, he appears in Dan River, Patrick, VA as a 24yo farmer, with wife Elizabeth (20yo) and children Caroline (6yo) and William (3yo).

On 10 Jul 1871, Ambrose Going of Patrick Co, VA, 23yo, widowed, s/o Enoch and Sally Going, married Nancy J. Morris, 18yo single d/o Sabul and Jane Morris, in Patrick Co, VA; race is not reported (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XR95-SXH and https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XR4C-4WQ).

On 04 Dec 1872, Ambrose Going of Patrick Co, VA, 24yo, single, s/o E. and S. Going, married N. J. Hazlewood, 26yo d/o J. and S. Hazlewood, in Patrick Co, VA; both spouses are single and white (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XR95-SH4).

In the 1880 census, a 31yo mulatto miner named Ambrose Goin (single, born Virginia) was boarding in the Lead Mines district of Wythe Co, VA, rooming with the family of Lettie Surrett (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCRD-J7B). In this same census, the widowed Sally Goin (50yo widowed housekeeper) was living in Dan River, Patrick, VA with her brother Ruel Bowman (62yo) and his niece Caroline Goin (14yo) and nephew William Goin (12yo), who worked on his farm (all born VA) (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MC5T-NCJ).

In the 1900 census, the widower Ambrose Goin, born Aug 1847, is residing with his mother Sally Goin. He and both his parents are reportedly born NC. The widowed Sally Goin reports that she was born Oct 1829 in Virginia (strangely), and that both her parents were also born there.

In 1901, 18yo Lettie Surratt, born 1883 in Wythe Co, VA, married Charles Jones in Wytheville; her parents are identified as Ambrose Goins and Nannie Surratt (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XRSC-NVQ). In the 1900 census, Lettie (20yo) and Jennie (16yo) Surratt reside with their stepfather James Darby and their 34yo mother Nannie Darby (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMJF-93V).

On 29 Mar 1903, Ambrose Going of Patrick Co, VA, 55yo, widowed, s/o E. and Sallie Going, married Mattie Going, widowed d/o Tim Going, in Patrick Co, VA (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XR44-LQC).

In the 1910 census, "Ambers" Goins (63yo) and his wife Mattie Goins (36yo) are living in Adkin, McDowell Co, WV, with his son William Goins (39yo) and William's wife Laura (44yo) and son Clay (18yo) (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPNB-HQR). In 1900, Clay Goins appears as William's adopted son Cleveland Caves (9yo), with a sister Mary Caves (6yo); William's birthdate is given as Mar 1869, and he has been married 7 years (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMND-S7P).
jamisongraffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04968555508841160124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2104437978466596073.post-23715743333746950792018-02-04T22:10:08.622-05:002018-02-04T22:10:08.622-05:00Enoch and Ambrose Goins served together as private...Enoch and Ambrose Goins served together as private soldiers in Company G of the 22nd Virginia Cavalry. Extracts at fold3.com show that they enlisted at Wytheville, VA on 31 Dec 1863 or 01 Jan 1864, and were paid on that day (but never again!). They were captured at Winchester 19 Sep 1864; Ambrose was wounded. They both appear on an undated prisoner of war roll taken at Harper's Ferry, which notes that they were sent to Point Lookout, MD 23 Sep 1864. They arrived 26 Sep 1864. Enoch Gowins or Goins died 24 Oct 1864 of acute diarrhea. Ambrose Goings or Goins was exchanged 30 Oct 1864. Enoch's name appears on the memorial erected at the Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery (see https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/27562797/enoch-goins). These appear to be the father and son who appear in the south district of Patrick County in the 1850 and 1860 census (Ararat post office).jamisongraffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04968555508841160124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2104437978466596073.post-5397112690786721552018-01-13T20:01:20.711-05:002018-01-13T20:01:20.711-05:00Hi Cindy...
